EuroSteamCon Portugal 2016 – Indiegogo Campaign

Facebook

After months of deliberations, ideas, and conspiracies, we can finally reveal our plans for this year. We want EuroSteamCon Portugal to keep growing and be better, for it to be something different from last year. For that purpose we have created an Indiegogo campaign to help us finance the convention and our expenses, and we need your help to make this possible!

To know more about this you can read the campaign’s page. The Court thanks you for any help you can give!

Comic Con Portugal 2015

And after three very busy – but fun! – days, we bring you photographs from our visit to Comic Con Portugal 2015. The Court thanks everyone who paid us a visit, whether to talk, to see our little exhibition, or even be a part of nerf gun duels. We hope you had as much fun as we did!

(Those who were not able to go can see some of our products on our new Store!)

This was without a doubt a very active and steamy year for the Northern Court. We’d like to thank everyone and anyone that was with us throughout our journey!

Who knows what surprises wait for us in 2016!

EuroSteamCon Portugal
Google Hangout with Ed Greenwood

Greenwood2We have to announce a slight change to our schedule: Brian Kesinger is going to be unavailable for the Google Hangout, but do not despair, the Court has taken care of it!

On October 4th, a sunday, at 6:30pm GMT / 10:30am PDT, will be talking with Ed Greenwood. Well known for creating the Forgotten Realms world and for writing numerous books in that same universe, he’s now experimenting with the world of steampunk, with The Iron Assassin. Besides still contributing to the world of Forgotten Realms with articles and others, he’s an avid roleplayers, and works as a bookclerk at his city’s library.

Hot pulp fiction: a steampunk Frankenstein is a weapon of death in an alternate 19th-century England

On an Earth that is not our own, Victoria never ascended the throne; the House of Hanover held England only briefly before being supplanted by the House of Harminster. It is a time of gaslamps and regularly scheduled airship flights, of trams and steam-driven clockwork with countless smoke-belching stacks. London, the capitol of the Empire of the Lion, is a filthy, crowded, fast-growing city where a series of shocking murders threatens the throne itself.

Energetic young inventor Jack Straker believes he has created a weapon to defend the Crown: a reanimated, clockwork-enhanced corpse he can control. He introduces “the Iron Assassin” to the highly placed Lords who will decide if Straker’s invention becomes a weapon of the Lion—or something to be destroyed.

It quickly becomes apparent that the Iron Assassin is more self-willed than Straker intended, and that the zombie’s past life is far more sinister than Straker thought. Has he created a runaway monster? Or the best guardian the Lion could ever hope for?

Bring your questions to the Hangout! On that day we’ll share the links to the video on our Facebook page.

EuroSteamCon Portugal
Google Hangout with James Lopez

Lopez

The next Google Hangouts will happen during EuroSteamCon Portugal 2015, as part of the schedule. However, they will still me transmitted live so everyone can watch them and participate.

On Saturday October 3rd, at 6:30pm (GMT) / 10:30am (PDT), we’ll be speaking with James Lopez, the director of Hullabaloo, a series of 4 animation shorts still in production. This project was funded through Indiegogo and it has a team of animation veterans who’ve worked in big projects, specially in Disney, and who want to preserve the art of 2D hand drawn animation.

hullabaloo

It’s the story of Veronica Daring, a brilliant young scientist who returns home from an elite finishing school to find her father – the eccentric inventor Jonathan Daring – missing without a trace. The only clue left behind points Veronica toward Daring Adventures, an abandoned amusement park used by her father to test his fantastical steam-powered inventions. There she discovers a strange girl named Jules, a fellow inventor who agrees to help Veronica in locating her missing father and discovering the secrets of his work.

And so we continue to the fourth event on the Road to EuroSteamCon Portugal! On the last Friday of this month, the 31st of July, at 11am PDT / 7pm GMT, we’ll be speaking with Shelley Adina. Although she also writes books in other genres, she’s known by the steampunk series Magnificent Devices!

With courageous heroines, zeppelins, big locomotives and submarines, and adventures throughout the world, this series has now 8 volumes. The most recent book, A Gentleman of Means, was published on May of this year. Will it be the last, or will we have more adventures with Lady Claire Trevelyan and her companions? Join us in the Hangout and find out!

As always, we will be waiting your questions, which can be sent to steamnorte@gmail.com, or made at the Google Hangout itself. We also have a Facebook event which you can join.

See you there!

Road to EuroSteamCon
Google Hangout with Professor Elemental

Professor

Another month and another event on the Road to EuroSteamCon Portugal! This time we’ll be speaking with Professor Elemental, a host and Hip Hop artist who describes himself as “a steampunk flavoured mad Professor, I’ll brew you a nice Hip Hop number, stir in some comedy, and then serve it with scones.”

On July 15th, a Wednesday, the Professor will speak with us about his work and how it’s influenced by steampunk, at 3pm GMT (10am EDT). An example of his work is the song for which he first became known, Cup of Brown Joy, and All In Together, where several steampunk fans participated. At the end of the post we will share his most recent music video, Don’t Feed the Trolls.

As always, get your questions ready! You can send them to our email steamnorte@gmail.com, post them on our Facebook page, or even on the event’s page.

Until then, you can watch our previous Hangouts, with authors Jim Butcher and Cherie Priest.

“What’s Your Steampunk Persona?” Quiz

SteampunkS

The Northern Court made a quiz where you can discover what would be your steampunk persona! There are several possible results, including archaeologist, scientist, gunslinger, aeronaut, and others. Maybe it will give you ideas for a costume, or even for a story or illustration!

Try to find out all the results, and share yours with us! You can take the quiz here, or by clicking the image above.

Road to EuroSteamCon
Google Hangout with Cherie Priest

After a great Hangout with Jim Butcher, we’re announcing the next event of Road to EuroSteamCon! Soon we’ll publish a summary of our interview with the author, as well as subtitles for the video, but until then you can watch it here.

CheriePriestOn  May 24th, a Sunday, by 2pm EDT or 7pm GMT, author Cherie Priest will join us for a Google Hangout to speak about her steampunk books and the genre itself.

This is the second event of the Road to EuroSteamCon Portugal, a series of events until the convention in October. If everything goes according to plan, it won’t be the last! However, we welcome any opinions and suggestions!

The author has an extensive steampunk biography. Her The Clockwork Century series counts with 7 books, and she’s also participated in several anthologies, such as The Mammoth Book of Steampunk, Steampunk Reloaded, Steampunk Revolution, The Thackery T. Lambshead Cabinet of  Curiosities,  and others.

Until the day of the event you can send your questions to steamnorte@gmail.com. During the Hangout, you’ll be able to do it on the video itself, on our Facebook page, or on YouTube’s comment section. Until then you can join our event!

Road to EuroSteamCon Portugal
Google Hangout with Jim Butcher

JimButcher

The Northern Court is happy to announce that on May 7th, a Thursday, by 2PM CT / 8PM GMT, we’ll host a Google Hangout with the author Jim Butcher.

This event (which you can join here) is part of the Road to EuroSteamCon, which will have several events and activities as we prepare for the convention in October. So keep an eye out, this will not be the only event of the sort! But for now we’ll keep the mystery, we have a reputation to maintain.

In this Google Hangout we’ll talk about steampunk and the author’s new book, THE AERONAUT’S WINDLASS, the first in the The Cinder Spires series, which will be out on the 29th of September. Everyone is welcome to watch it and you’ll be able to contribute with questions in the chat that will be available then. But we invite you to leave us questions now in the comments, or to send us an email to: steamnorte@gmail.com! Although we’re going to focus on this new book, and the genre it belongs to, you can also ask questions about The Dresden Files series (but getting to those will depend on the author’s availability).

This new series is described as ““Horatio Hornblower meets The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen—it’s a fantastic, creative new series of airships, privateers, warrior monks, and mad sorcerers. It’s steampunk meets magic with a dose of sci-fi for seasoning.” This is the synopsis for the first The Cinder Spires book:

Since time immemorial, the Spires have sheltered humanity, towering for miles over the mist-shrouded surface of the world. Within their halls, aristocratic houses have ruled for generations, developing scientific marvels, fostering trade alliances, and building fleets of airships to keep the peace.

Captain Grimm commands the merchant ship, Predator. Fiercely loyal to Spire Albion, he has taken their side in the cold war with Spire Aurora, disrupting the enemy’s shipping lines by attacking their cargo vessels. But when the Predator is severely damaged in combat, leaving captain and crew grounded, Grimm is offered a proposition from the Spirearch of Albion—to join a team of agents on a vital mission in exchange for fully restoring Predator to its fighting glory.

And even as Grimm undertakes this dangerous task, he will learn that the conflict between the Spires is merely a premonition of things to come. Humanity’s ancient enemy, silent for more than ten thousand years, has begun to stir once more. And death will follow in its wake.

You can read an excerpt from the 2nd chapter here.

Leave us your questions, and we hope to see you on the 7th of May! We’ll publish the link to the Hangout here on the blog and on our Facebook page.
